Obituary for Ruth Thurmond Brown

On March 14, 1935 in Durant, MS. a daughter was born to the late Naomi Davis and Dewitt Thurmond, they named her Ruth Jean Thurmond (G-Moma). She was one of ten children reared in a Christian home along with nine siblings. Reola Morris, Mary Harris, Delores Cole, Dewitt Thurmond, Willie Thurmond, Edward Thurmond, Calvin Cole and Curtis Cole, who all preceded her in death, and one surviving sister Magnolia Clark. She attended Grenada Public School in Leflore, Mississippi. Ruth Jean accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and was baptized at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and later confirmed at Transfiguration Lutheran Church under the Pastoral care of Rev. Gerald Grimm. She volunteered at youth events and vacation bible school. On July 2, 1956 she was united in Holy Matrimony to Oliver Brown. To this union five children were born. Debra, Renee, Adrienne Renita, David and Derron. One son Lester Thurmond preceded her in death, along with one Grandson Renell Brown, and one Great-Granddaughter Passion Johnson. Ruth Jean moved to St. Louis, MO in 1957. In 1969, she took a job as a Patient Care Technician helping patients in Park Side Tower, Normandy Hospital and Mother of Good Counsel Home where she retired in 2005. She touched many lives. Ruth Jean will be remembered for her Christian spirit, famous cooking and generosity of helping others. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. On April 11, 2014 she was called home to be with the Lord with her family at her bedside. We all knew that it was something special about Ruth. One Great-Grandson Amir was born on March 14, 2014 and another Great-Grandson Emanuel was born on April 11, 2014. She leaves to cherish her precious memories; A devoted husband of 58 years Oliver; Three daughters; Debra Brown, Renee Brown and Adrienne Renita Fox (Andrew); two sons; David Brown (Steve) and Derron Brown (Corliss; One sister Magnolia Clark of St. Louis, MO. Nine Grandchildren; NaTasha, NaTania, Nate, Andre, Ebonie, Troy, Andrea, Jeremy and Jered. Fourteen Great-Grandchildren; One Sister-in-law Sophie Thurmond of Memphis, TN and two Brother-in-laws, Henderson Brown of St. Louis, MO and Mack Brown of Jacksonville, Fl. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
