Obituary for Rubin Williams

Funeral Mass:   10am Tuesday, May 30, 2006    St. Augustine Catholic Church Interment:        Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery Rubin M. Williams, Sr. was born on July 5, 1923 in Des Arc, Arkansas to the union of Jewel Butler and Ed Williams.  He was the second oldest of nine, six brothers and two sisters.  His parents, five brothers, Cleveland, Maurice, O.W., Arthur and J.R. and one sister, Frances preceded him in death. On December 5, 1942 , Rubin entered the military to serve his country in World War II.  He was stationed in the Philippine Islands where he served in the United States Army.  He received an honorable discharge on July 1, 1946 .  On July 3, 1946 , Rubin married Cleo Thomas in Des Arc, Arkansas.  To this union, two children, Pamela and Rubin, Jr. were born in Little Rock, Arkansas.  His wife died on September 29, 1994 . At the age of 23, Rubin professed his faith in the Lord at St. Peter's Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas.  After leaving the army, Rubin continued his education at Dunbar Community College in Little Rock, Arkansas. After moving to St. Louis, Missouri, Rubin gained employment at the V.A. Medical Center as a nurse assistant in 1954 .  He would remain there until he retired in 1985 .  He was very conscientious and meticulous.  He worked in numerous areas of nursing:  medicine, orthopedic surgery and recovery (which also included transporting patients back to the wards after surgery).  In 1961 , Rubin chose the Catholic faith and started attending St. Barbara Catholic Church.  He was an active member of the new parish, St. Augustine Catholic Church until his health failed.  Rubin loved him some St. Vincent De Paul Society!  He was active with St. Vincent from 1979 to the present.  He was a long term president of the organization.  Rubin fondly known as " Butch " had an extraordinary gift for landscaping.  He had numerous clients, who received much pleasure from his services on lawn care.  He also did the church's landscaping.  Rubin M. Williams, Sr . answered the Lord's call on May 18, 2006 .  He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter , Pamela J. Williams of St. Louis, MO; his son , Rubin M. Williams, Jr. of Holden, MA;  daughter-in-law , Shirley J. Williams;  three granddaughters, Akilah, Kamilah and Jamilah Williams;  two great-grandsons , Shahim Gulatte and Rahim Williams;  brother , Earl Williams of Little Rock, AR;  sister , Irene Tillman of Little Rock, AR;  niece, Connie M. Williams of Little Rock, AR;  first cousin , Dora Winston of Denver, CO;  brother-in-law Travis Young of Chicago, IL;  godchildren , Michael D. and Patrice J. Cox of St. Louis, MO;  special friend, Irlene Woodson;  best friend , James Rowe;  host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
