Obituary for Melvin "Big Mel" Thompson

On July 24, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri, a bouncing baby boy was born to the union of Wash and Nahline Thompson. He was the 6th child of 8 children. They proudly named him, Melvin. His parents along with a brother, Willis (Bill) preceded him in death. Melvin was educated in the St. Louis Public School System graduating from O’Fallon Tech. High School. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and in his lifetime giving thanks to God for all things in his life. When Melvin was young, he loved to hunt and fish. Early in life, Melvin met and married Alice Jenkins on June 10, 1963. To this union, two children were born. A daughter, Angela preceded him in death. Melvin in early years worked for years with the Weather type window and doors. His job was installing windows and doors. He also was the owner of the Bon Sior Lounge. Later Melvin gained a true love for rehabbing homes, becoming a master carpenter, redoing beautiful homes all over the city. Melvin loved entertaining the fellows on Sunday at his home watching football games in his man cave with no women allowed. Later Melvin met and married Paulette Clemmons on July 21, 2007. He was a collector of antiques. He loved planting flowers and keeping a manicured lawn. Melvin also loved gardening and growing tomatoes in his back yard. In the hot summer months when all the neighbors lawns would be brown, Melvin’s grass was always green. A neighbor once joked saying, “I know Melvin’s water bill is high.” In autumn a leaf could not fall and lie on his lawn, not even for a day. Melvin made his transition on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 4:40pm at St. Louis University Hospital. Melvin leaves to cherish his loving memory a loving wife, Paulette; two sons, Mark Thompson of Detroit, MI and Melvin Thompson of St. Louis, MO; 4 daughters, Melerie Thompson of Arlington, TN, Michelle Luster, Melva Thompson-Gayfield and Lisa Mitchell all of St. Louis, MO; 18 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Robert of Los Angeles, CA, Troy and Irving, both of St. Louis, MO; 3 sisters, Arlene Price (James), Kay Johnson and Gertrude Thompson all of St. Louis, MO; 2 stepdaughters, Glenda Williams and Holly Clemmons; 4 stepsons, Paveun Williams, Stacy Wilson, Guren Clemmons and Nathaniel Clemmons; 3 brothers-in-law; 3 sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and his beloved canine companion, Cooper. Special thanks to neighbor and friend, Ms. Hazel Gentry for your loving care.
