Obituary for James Schaffner

James Andrew Schaffner “Andy” James Andrew Schaffner died at his apartment on January 21, 2015 at age 63 of natural causes. Andy was born on March 5, 1951 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of James Daniel and Donna Grace (Click) Schaffner. When he was 10 months old his dad was transferred by Denison Engineering Co. to Rockford, Illinois, and then at age 5 again transferred to Rock Island, Illinois. In 1959 the family was again transferred, this time to Normandy, Missouri, in St. Louis County, where Andy lived the rest of his life. He attended Jefferson Elementary School in Pasadena Hills, Normandy Junior High, and graduated from Normandy High School in 1969. He had attended Sunday School and Vacation Bible Schools as a child and was a member of the Normandy Presbyterian Church. Also he was a member of the Boy Scouts. He attended classes at University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Missouri/St. Louis, and then spent several years as a barge deck hand on the Mississippi River. At his father’s request, Andy joined his father’s business Aarch Fluid Power & Dynamics, and learned about the repairs and various applications for the Denison Engineering Co. line of presses. After his father’s death, Andy continued to run the business from locations in Normandy and Granite City as James A. Schaffner, Inc. and later, Denison Press Parts & Services LLC. He was especially known for his ability to invent repair parts and make repairs on the presses still in use by customers of Denison. His interests and abilities were wide-ranging and included travel, art, music, science (especially astronomy), mechanics and car restoration, reading, computers, and assisting people who were needy. Survivors include sister Anne and husband Bill Clark of Morganville, Kansas; sister Linda and husband Bob Shaw of Juneau, Alaska; brother David and wife Judy Schaffner of St. Charles, Missouri; and niece Elizabeth and husband Scott Mall of Suisun City, California. A closed memorial service is being planned. Andy’s cremated remains have been placed in the Bloom Township cemetery in Clay County, Kansas, beside those of his mother, who passed away December 28, 2014. Guest book comments may be left at the website of the Professional Funeral Director Services & Crematory, Inc. at www.pfds.com. Memorial contributions for Andy may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
