Obituary for Helen Robinson

Helen Elvira Robinson was born February 18, 1926, in Collinsville, Illinois. She was the youngest child of Moses and Obera Matthews. Her parents, two sisters, Margaret and Alice; and one brother, James, preceded her in death. Helen met and married Gayle A. Stuart, and to this union one daughter, Audrey, was born. Gayle preceded Helen in death and she later married Emmett Robinson, who also preceded her in death. Other loved ones that had departed this life before her was daughter, Edna Mae Rhodes and grandson, Don E. Rhodes, Jr. She graduated from Collinsville High School during World War II, when nurses were in high demand. Helen studied the nursing profession at St. Mary’s School of Nursing, and upon completion worked at St Louis County Hospital. She was passionate about the art of healing. She faithfully served in various hospital departments before retiring. Helen did home-service nursing until her 86 th year of life. Her patients loved her, and she enthusiastically learned new equipment and wellness techniques even during her own health struggles. Her desire to extend care to family members as they aged, neighbors she grew to love, new friends at the rehab centers, and even roommates during her hospital stays never wavered. Throughout her life, Helen never lost faith and cherished opportunities to demonstrate her love of taking care of people. It was indeed her calling. Last year, the family held their bi-annual family reunion in St. Louis so they could gather, visit, and express best wishes for her recovery. Over one hundred family members, representing five generations came. Mrs. Robinson, as she was affectionately called, lived the life she believed Jesus would approve. She was a member of Unity United Methodist Church for over 40 years, where she was active in many ministries, which included singing in the choir and participating in the annual bazaar and holiday celebrations. She leaves to mourn her passing: a devoted daughter ~ Audrey L. Stuart; sister-in-law ~ Valaska Matthews; granddaughter ~ Ericka Rhodes; grandson ~ Jason Thompson; and great-granddaughter ~ Angel; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
