Obituary for Melvin "Smokey" McCall

Melvin McCall, Sr. , affectionately known as Smokey, was born on Sunday, June 6, 1926, to Nathaniel Burley McCall and Della Louise St. James. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death. He attended Douglass School and graduated June 7, 1944. Upon graduation, Melvin was recruited by numerous colleges, but was drafted and joined the Navy that same year. On September 25, 1948, he married Mamie Johnson. To that union four children were born: Glenda, Melvin, Vickie, and Larry. Mamie preceded him in death. Melvin was light-hearted and fun-loving. He enjoyed life, people, and spending time with family and friends. He had a love for performing and was a master storyteller who attracted people just by sharing his experiences in the most humorous and candid way. Many knew him as “Mr. Fix It,” the neighborhood small-engine mechanic. People came from near and far to have their lawnmowers, leaf blowers, weed eaters, and vacuum cleaners repaired – no payment required; all you had to do was listen to a few notes on the piano or a story or two. Melvin loved all sports and considered himself an expert in most of them. He was experienced in playing football, baseball, basketball, and running track. In 2001, his athletic talents and abilities shared while at Douglass, earned him an induction into the Webster Groves High School Statesmen Sports Hall of Fame. He was extremely proud of this recognition! He loved God. He accepted Christ at a young age and continued to be an active member at First Baptist Church until his health began to fail recently. After the passing of his wife Mamie, he shared his life with Mary Lee Johnson, his long-time companion. Melvin played an important role in the lives of her children and grandchildren especially her son Perri (Stephanie) Johnson, Sr. He leaves to mourn his memory: four children ~ Glenda (James) Gill, Melvin (Karen) McCall, Vickie McCall, and Larry (Connie) McCall; twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who loved him dearly!
