Obituary for Maggie "Skip" Hinton

Maggie Pearl “Skip” Hinton was born on April 8, 1932, to the union of Tom Elbert and Georgia Hinton in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She was the youngest of eight children. She is preceded in death by both parents, her husband Elder Willie Greer and six siblings, sisters Willie Mae Willis, Mary Francis White, Bertha Keeble, and Georgia Moore; brothers: Elbert Joe, and Calvin Hinton. Maggie was raised in her native city of Poplar Bluff, and attended the Butler County Public School System, before moving to St. Louis and entering Cosmetology School. She was a licensed Beautician/Cosmetologist and she owned and operated her own shops for more than sixty years. In the early 1950’s she met and married Thurman (Bluff) Thornton. This union produced three loving daughters Jo.Ann, Jo.Nita, and Joyce Marie. She was affectionately known as “Skip” or “Aunt Skip” by her family members, and nieces and nephews. In later years she met and married Elder Willie Greer, and fifteen (15) step-siblings were added to the family from his previous unions. Shortly after their marriage, they were installed as Pastor & First (1st) Lady of Summers Faith Temple C.O.G.I.C., until declining health caused him to retire. He Passed Away in 2008. During that time, Mother Greer (as she was called) was a very active First (1st) Lady, and was well loved by their church family, and especially by the children, whom she worked with intensely! They were blessed with the task of raising their new born great-grand daughter (Marie Collins) from five days old, until Maggie had to be admitted to the Christian Care Home (a skilled nursing facility), due to declining health, eighteen years later. She was a multi-talented woman; she loved to cook and was famous for her “Coconut Caramel Pineapple Layer Cake”; She also loved to decorate. It wasn’t anything for us (as kids) to come home from school on a Monday and find brand new living room or dining room furniture. She was also a shrewd business woman, other than operating beauty shops, she also did Income Taxes, and operated a Real Estate Office and was a very talented Seamstress, sewing for her family and professionally. Her greatest job was that of “Mom n’ Chief”, and the World’s Best Grandmother, all of the grand kids absolutely adored her, they could do “no wrong” in her eyes! Maggie was endowed with the “Gift of Helps”. For many years, she supplied clothes, food, blankets and whatever was needed to people in her neighborhood or church that were in need. She always used as her example: That back in the early 1950’s while the three of us kids were still in diapers, she had to buy ice to keep our milk from spoiling.. She saw a man on his way to the Junk Yard, and he had an old Refrigerator on his cart, which he would sell for $3.00, which she didn’t have. That man gave her that refrigerator. She never forgot that gesture of kindness! Maggie’s Final Journey ended on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at Christian Northeast Hospital. She leaves to inherit her loving legacy: three daughters ~ Minister JoAnn (Earl) Johnson, Covenant Minister Jo.Nita Dudley-Thornton of St. Louis, Missouri and Rev. Joyce M. (Ray) Granderson of Bolingbrook, Illinois; great-granddaughter ~ Marie Collins of St. Louis, Missouri; step children ~ Barbara, Abraham, Larry, Billy, Rhonda, Jacqueline, Judy and Cynthia; residing in different cities and states; one sister ~ Josephine Mosley of St. Louis, Missouri; and a host of grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
