Obituary for Elizabeth "Madear" Mahan (Davis)

Elizabeth Davis Mahan was born on September 23, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents were Frank and Hattie Davis, who preceded her in death. She married the love of her life, James Mahan, in November 1941. They were married for over 75 years, three quarters of a century, and were blessed with six (6) children.

Elizabeth joined New Northside Missionary Baptist Church over 55 years under the leadership of Bishop Willie J. Ellis, and now, Rev. Rodrick K. Burton. Elizabeth worked at Barnes Hospital for 29 years, retiring in 1995 from the medical records department. She was involved in many activities, including bowling, watching her St. Louis Cardinals baseball games, walking, gardening, crafts, making pottery, and cooking. Her family loved her delicious meals, which she cooked every Sunday. Elizabeth faithfully served as an usher, as well as assisted in the preparation and the serving of meals, which was her reasonable service. Always personifying grace and decorum wherever she went, she especially enjoyed membership and participation in the Cardettes Social Club. The embodiment of all that she was could
best be witnessed in her demonstration as consummate mother-to-all, particularly in serving as den mother to Edward's Cub Scout troop. She was also a purveyor of unsold St. Louis Bread Company items to local food pantries, which she wrapped and distributed to various food pantries
and neighborhoods.

She will be remembered most for her warm and caring personality, her dedication to her family, and her multifarious interests and talents. Affectionately known as “MaDear” to all who entered her home, she made an indelible mark upon all the lives she touched, often manifested in how she shared her love, with every dish she prepared for all who hungered.

Elizabeth was such a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, survived by her children Catherine George (Sherman), Jimmie Mahan (Phyllis), Jerome Mahan (Sharon), Marsha Mahan, Edward Mahan, as well as her sisters Delores Moore and Vernell Martin, sister in-law, Marilyn Davis, 12 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband James Mahan, son Ervin Mahan, brother Luther Eugene Davis, and other siblings, Bessie Larry, Frank Davis, Anniemae Hines and Girliemae Diniwiddie.
